About GOVT.RLV COLLEGE OF MUSIC & FINE ARTS yesterday and today



  • RLV (Radha Lakshmi Vilasam) Institute began in1936 under the patronage of the Royal Family of Kochi, based in Tripunithura.
  • Institute was taken over by the Government of Kerala in 1956 and was named RLV Academy of Music and Institute of Fine Arts where several diploma and post diploma courses were conducted.
  • The College was upgraded and affiliated under Mahathma Gandhi University,Kottayam in the year 1998.
  • Now it has become one of the best institutions in South India, offering Degree and Post Graduate Courses in Vocal Music, Violin, Veena, Mridangam, Kathakali Vesham,Kathalali Sangeetham, Chenda, Maddalam, Bharathanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Painting, Applied Arts and Sculpture.



RLV College of Music and Fine Arts, Tripunithura, Kerala, presently known as “Shanthinikethan of South India” had a humble beginning in a single apartment belonging to the Cochin Royal family. With a vision of upliftment of woman community, the then-King of Cochin, H.H. Sri. Kerala Varma Mitukkan Thampuarn and his wife Smt. Lakshmikutty Nethyaramma invited experts in Stiching, Kaikottikkali, Painting, etc. to impart learning to girls and elder ladies so that they may utilize their leisure time fruitfully. This endeavor developed into an institution in the name of the King’s daughter Radha and wife Lakshmi and was named as ‘Radha Lakshmi Vilasam Academy’ incorporating Vocal music also.


In 1956, this institution became under the government of Kerala and was renamed as RLV Academy of Music and Fine Arts. By that time the Diploma and Post Diploma Courses in Vocal Music, Bharathanatyam, Kathakali, Painting, etc. were started. Later on, in 1998, this institution was affiliated to Mahathma Gandhi University, resulting in the restructuring of the Diploma and Post Diploma Courses into Degree and Post Graduate courses.


At present there are three faculties- namely- Music, Performing Arts and Fine Arts. Faculty of Music conducts Degree(BA) and PG (MA) courses in Vocal Music, Veena, Violin and Mridangam, Faculty of Performing Arts conducts degree (BA) and PG (MA) courses in Kathakali (branches like Vesham, Sangeetham, Chenda and Maddalam), Bharathanatyam and Mohiniyattam and Faculty of Fine Arts offers degree (BFA) and PG (MFA) courses in Painting, Sculpture and Applied Art.


Eminent musicians like Nellai T.V. Krishnamoorthy, Parassala B. Ponnammal, Mavelikkara R Prabhakara Varma, Trippunithura K Lalitha etc. had been the ruling hands (Principlas) of this college on various periods. Many stalwarts on various fields like Sri. Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair (Kathakalivesham), Kalamandalam Keshava Pothuval (Chenda), Cherthala Thankappa Panicker (Kathakali Sangeetham), Neyyattinkara Vasudevan (Vocal Music), Kalakshethra Vilasini (Bharathanatyam), and so many well known artists had been the faculties who imparted their valuable knowledge to the generations. Ganagandharva Padmabhushan Dr. K.J Yesudas, Nagaswara Vidwan Thiruvizha Jayashankar, Thonnakkal Peethambaran, Mayyanad Keshavan Namboothiri, Binoy Varghese… thus goes the list of gems evolved from this prestigious institution!!!

Born in a family of rich musical heritage, Smt R Kamakshi got initial training in Veena from her paternal uncle Sangeeta Acharya Sri R Venkataraman and vocal music from his sister Prof. R Srubbalakshmi Ammal, who is also a renowned Veena artist. Her first appointment as Academic Assistant ( Veena) at RLV College of Music and Institute of Fine Arts, Tripunithura in 1978 took place after she passed Ganabhooshanam (Veena) in First class. Continuing in service she passed Ganapraveena (Veena) and acquired MA Equivalency from MG University, Kottayam.


While in service she attained promotions as First Grade Tutor (Veena) in 1993, Assistant Professor (Veena) in 1998, Professor in 2006 and now, she is the Principal at RLV College of Music and Fine Arts, Tripunithura. She is also fortunate to have achieved advanced training in Music at Kerala Fine Arts Society, Ernakulam in 1990 where music stalvarts like Chalakkudi Narayana Swamy, Sri R Prabhakara Varma, Vechur Hariharasubrahmanya Iyer, Dr. Malini Hariharan had been imparting their valuable knowledge to the students.


Being in Government service she has chaired various examinations conducted by various Universities. She was a member of the academic council, MG University and the judging committee for the evaluation of Kerala State Youth Festival. She has given vocal and veena performances on various stage programs in and outside Kerala.
